Edge Quality – Remaining a Cut Above Customer Expectations

Consistency and repeatability are the hallmarks of any successful metal fabrication shop. Perfectly cut edges are not easily achieved, and yet inconsistent cuts can resonate negatively with customers. Maintaining desirable edge quality on production parts involves many variables. Monitoring and adjusting those variables is key- but first, one must target the causes for the anomaly.

One way Millerbernd minimizes edge quality issues is by laser cutting. Even then, cut quality variables range from dialing in the correct beam intensity, to basic metallurgy of the steel. It isn’t just having a skilled laser operator (although that is important) but quality is only assured with consistent procedures and excellent Quality Assurance, because the issue sometimes starts even before steel is cut.

We have procedures in place to identify and reject poor steel before we even start the cutting process. This information can be found in Material Certifications provided by our steel vendors on what and how much of an element resides in your steel. Each element adds its specific characteristic to the sheet, and each must fall within certain parameters. With the combination of top notch operators and ISO quality procedures, you are assured of quality cuts. Millerbernd Laser has invested countless hours in preparation to ensure all three of our lasers meet or exceed industry standards.

Things on the Rise as Recession Clouds Begin to Clear

Although many companies continue to struggle in our sluggish economy, Millerbernd Laser has seen a significant growth in business over the past six months. "We are actually beginning to re-hire employees we were forced to lay-off last year," says Brad Millerbernd.

Farid Currimbhoy agrees, "In the past six months business has really picked up from across all clients and sectors of our customer base. This really is beginning to feel like a recovery." It certainly is for Millerbernd Laser, with orders up over 20% compared to last year.

"We've been fortunate enough to not just re-hire employees, but in some cases actually promote them and bring in new people to fill the space!" continues Farid. "It's just a great feeling to be able to bring back these folks and to see them working here again, really gives me confidence in the future for ourselves and the economy in general."

Another Notch on Our Belt - CWB Aluminum Certification

Focused on the utilization of the latest fabrication technology, while maintaining the highest standards of quality, is our number one objective. Not only do we continue to take advantage of technology advancements and process refinements, but most importantly we strive to employ best trained and certified welding team in the upper Midwest. Yes, we have added another notch on our belt adding the Certification of CWB Standards for Aluminum Welding.

Millerbernd Laser was officially ISO certified in 2009. Although many companies would stop there (in fact, many competitors of Millerbernd's only adhere to ISO standards and haven't actually ever been certified), we continue to improve our process and performance in every area of our plant. Today, the focus is on our welding center where our clients can now expect rigorous standards in all welding applications including stainless steel and aluminum. Learn more about the certification and standards set by the CWB at their website.
